Tribute to Asa Werner

ASA WERNER 1978 – 2008
A Dog Rescuer

What can I say? Asa quit a great job in Apple computers in Cork around 2000/2001 to come and join our team at PAWS in Sallins. She was a quirky kid, full of romance for her boyfriend, whom she left in Cork, and full of passion for dogs and cats. She came from a country where animals were cared for and could not fathom what was happening in Ireland.

She surprised me one day when we were discussing Life Hero’s in the yard in Sallins, I asked her, who is your hero?, You are, she replied, for all you do for the animals.

Asa returned home to Sweden after a couple of years and started NeverNeverLand Rescue, from whence she became a hero herself. She secured Hundreds of homes for unwanted Irish dogs from PAWS, Maureen in Sligo, Dogs Aid, Brenda & Hannah among others. She and our John were a lethal combination, when i would get them to go to the pound to collect ONE dog; they always arrived back with a half a dozen waifs hidden in the van.

Asa had booked her ticket to arrive here on wed to celebrate her birthday and help us at the Pet Expo in Cork, she was so looking forward to it. But it was not to be.

When her mum called me this morning to tell me that she had died in a freak accident, the brakes failed on her bicycle, I really didn’t believe it. I thought it was someone playing a sick joke.

As I look around me, there are pieces of her everywhere in our house, Hundreds of fabulous photographs; a magazine she left here two weeks ago, her wellies in the spare room, even her special K is in the drawer in the kitchen.
She flew over on Christmas eve to help us on Christmas day and brought Swedish Ham and we played silly games, and drank a lot of wine, little did we know it was to be her last.

Asa drove a lot of people crazy by times, her time keeping was woeful, her passion for the dogs got her into tizzys with some folk, but it was all done for the dogs, she lived for nothing else.

I will remember her for her wonderful gift of photography, her love of ice cream, popcorn and Blue Wicked :o) She was just a baby (to me) in her prime and did not deserve this.

Her legacy will live on. Her friends will make sure of that.
