How to protect against dog theft

14th April 2021

We have all heard the worrying reports of the increase in dog theft all over the country. Particularly the recent incident in Cork where a French bulldog owner was attacked with a hammer and the dog was stolen while out walking. Thankfully the dog was found and returned home thanks to An Garda síochána. It is safe to say it’s the stuff of nightmares to think anything so sinister could happen. Our dogs are our family members and it’s a worry to think of them going missing. With this in mind, below is a compiled list of things we can do as dog owners to help protect ourselves and our dogs against dog theft. Much of the following information was sourced from www.garda.ie.

Ensure your dog is microchipped, registered and all the chip details are upto date. It is a legal requirement now for all dogs but it is also a permanent identity on your pet and an instant trace back to you.

Never leave your dog unattended in the garden, in cars or tied up outside shops. These are the moments of opportunity that dog thieves look out for.

Avoid posting on social media where you’re walking or tagging places or spots you frequent with your dog. Wait until later so no one knows your exact whereabouts.

Be aware of strangers asking you questions about your dog, particularly if you have a purebred.

Change up your dog walking routes and trails. Vary your times of walks and routes.

Take care when choosing someone to care for your dog if you are going away from home or need a dog walker. Use a reputable company or boarding kennels and check references for people who provide dog or house-sitting services.

At home, make sure your garden is secure or even fit a bell to the gate so you hear if anyone opens it. Many people have invested in more secure fencing or cctv to help deter dog thieves and trespassers.
