April is Adopt A Greyhound Month

4th April 2022

April is National adopt a greyhound month! Greyhounds and other sighthounds are the number one kind of dog to find in rescues and pounds all over Ireland. They can sometimes take twice as long to get adopted compared to other breeds of dogs. We are as happy as ever to do our part to help raise awareness on just what amazing pets these dogs make.

There are many misconceptions about Greyhounds but the truth is they are extremely loveable couch potatoes, who enjoy spending the majority of their time curled up on a cosy bed or sofa surrounded by people they love. Greyhounds make the most loyal, loving family pets. They are mostly gentle, quiet souls who are great with children and have a quirky sense of humour.

Often visitors to PAWS will ask why we have so many greyhounds in our care. People who contact us to adopt a dog are not often interested in spending any time to get to know one. However, more often than not, anyone who takes some time to get to know a greyhound will fall instantly in love. This is due to their quiet nature and loveable characters.

They also make great pets for first time dog owners as they require so little exercise, they don’t tend to shed a lot and don’t have a lot of demands. Just point them to the nearest couch!

The most common myth we hear about these elegant, long legged hounds is that they have huge exercise needs or require a lot of space. While it is true that, like all dogs, a greyhound enjoys a walk with their humans, many are more than satisfied with a couple of strolls a day or a quick sprint and then to be headed back to the couch for the rest of the day. They are the laid back persons’ ideal choice of dog. Don’t believe us? Contact us to meet some of the greys in our care and let them do all the talking! Your new best friend will be waiting to meet you.
