Why adopt a lurcher?

Visit any rescue shelter, dog pound or talk to any animal fosterer, kennel staff member or volunteer about the dogs they care for and you’ll quickly see a common denomination. That demonination will have a long nose, slim body and even longer legs.  Lurchers are the number one dog breed to be found looking for a home across the nation.

It is unclear exactly why this is. They are often used for hunting purposes and surrendered to rescues or pounds when they are no longer fit for purpose.  It might also be because they are often a misunderstood breed as people think because they are bred originally for hunting purposes, they do not make good family pets. However, this could not be further from the truth. Much like spaniels, setters, terriers, poodles and labradors who are also bred for hunting purposes, lurchers can make the best family pets.

This is all down to their amiable, soft nature. They have sweet characters who love human and dog company.  Unlike many perceptions of them and greyhounds, they are lazy dogs and do not require a lot of exercise. They are neither aggressive or highly strung.  In fact, they are commonly known as the Couch Potato dog.

They also make ideal first time dog owners’ dogs all down to their quiet demeanour, gentle natures and low grooming and exercise needs.  A short stroll or quick sprint in the garden is usually sufficient enough exercise before they retire to their bed for the day.
