Success Stories – Greyhound boy, Kyle, gets a home

17th November 2019

We love a successful adoption story here at PAWS. As you can imagine, we can have on average of 100+ dogs at our shelter looking for homes at any one time and dog adoption numbers in Ireland are not always consistent. We are thrilled when one of our dogs gets adopted, particularly when it is one of our hardest to rehome dogs and even more specifically when it is a sighthound like one of our lurchers or greyhounds who have been at our kennels for a while. This is because they are unfortunately not popular pets in Ireland, despite them making fantastic family pets, A fact many Irish people are unaware of.

Kyle was one of those dogs. Irish greyhounds can take a long time to find their forever home. We work alongside many greyhound rescues overseas where the greyhound is seen for what they are, a quiet, low maintenance, low shed, laid back family dog. These rescues work alongside us and help us vet people abroad who offer potential homes for retired Irish racing greyhounds. This assists us hugely in finding homes for the many greyhounds who pass through the PAWS shelter. In Ireland, greys are unfortunately not seen as the ideal family pet. However, times seem to be changing and Ireland is seemingly waking up to the prospect of retired greyhounds as pets and not just racing dogs. This is evident in the slowly increasing greyhound adoption numbers in Ireland. Kyle and his fantastic new family are proof of this and we could not be happier for them. Like all of our beautiful greyhounds, Kyle is a sweet natured, laidback, gentle, affectionate, loving boy and poster boy for the breed. Good luck and have a happy life you gorgeous boy!
